Showed Leadership

During my military service, our unit faced a severe flu epidemic, leaving many soldiers too sick to fulfill their duties. As the highest-ranking sergeant in charge of managing guard shifts, I found myself in a difficult position: ensuring the completion of critical guard duties while protecting my team’s health. Despite the challenges, I decided to lead by example. Recognizing the need for rest among the sickest soldiers, I personally volunteered to take on additional shifts, covering up to eight hours of guard duty daily. My actions ensured the successful completion of the mission and gave my teammates the recovery time they desperately needed. This experience taught me that true leadership is built on trust and selflessness, and it solidified my belief that a leader’s actions speak louder than words.

Solved a Business Problem

While working on a project with Seoul City to create jobs for seniors and reduce elderly suicide rates, I faced a major obstacle. The project initially revolved around guided subway tours to foster social belonging among seniors. However, the subway company’s refusal to cooperate left the initiative at a standstill. With limited time to salvage the project, I pivoted to a new approach. I immersed myself in field research at a senior welfare center, where I discovered that many seniors enjoyed creating handmade clothing as a hobby. Leveraging this insight, I collaborated with a designer and a senior cooperative to launch a handcrafted clothing brand, providing both a creative outlet and a sustainable revenue stream. While the project ultimately did not secure funding, it taught me the value of adaptability and reinforced the importance of aligning solutions with the needs of the people they aim to serve.

Faced a Conflict

When I was accepted to WashU, I was overjoyed but also faced a challenging decision regarding my long-distance relationship with my girlfriend. Moving from Virginia to Missouri meant we would be apart for an extended period, which was a daunting prospect for both of us. Determined to maintain our relationship, I committed to consistent communication and heartfelt gestures. Over 100 days, I wrote and sent her handwritten letters expressing my thoughts and feelings. Additionally, we made it a habit to talk every night, sharing our daily experiences and reinforcing our bond. These efforts not only helped us sustain our relationship but also strengthened our trust in each other. This experience taught me the importance of proactive communication and meaningful actions in overcoming challenges, whether personal or professional.

Gave a Presentation

Before deciding to study in the United States, I faced the challenge of convincing my parents, who were skeptical about my academic potential and the financial risks involved. To make my case, I created a detailed PowerPoint presentation titled "Strategic Focus Bombardment." The presentation summarized my personal growth, key life experiences, and aspirations, while also addressing potential costs and risks associated with studying abroad. I used this opportunity to demonstrate my commitment and determination by providing a clear plan for success. My parents were moved by the presentation and ultimately supported my decision. This experience not only underscored the power of a well-structured and emotionally resonant argument but also reinforced my belief in the importance of preparation and transparency when persuading others.
